(Note: I have a special dispensation from the Archdiocese of Atlanta to discuss this special matter involving the mayor of Macon notwithstanding the fact that I gave him up for Lent. And I’m not even Catholic.)
At a hastily called news conference this afternoon Macon Mayor C. Jack Ellis sought to explain the shortcomings in [...]

Does it make you want to throw up?
February 27th, 2007 · 6 Comments
Does reading about the $15 million error in city accounting procedures make you gag? Are you like Councilman Cole Thomason?
“You look at that thing,” Thomason was quoted in Matt Barnwell’s article’s in the Telegraph this morning, “and you’ll be nauseous. That’s how I feel about it. I feel like throwing up.”
How do you feel [...]

Audit problems
February 27th, 2007 · 4 Comments
Matt Barnwell writes in this morning’s Used-To-Be-Macon-Telegraph that Macon’s new auditor has uncovered a - gulp! - $15 million error in the city’s books.
Instead of having a $5 million surplus in the city’s general fund, there is a $10 million deficit. Other irregularities, too disturbing to report over breakfast, were uncovered.
The problems were reported [...]

Here’s an idea

A Macon City Council committee today tabled a proposal by (I can’t mention his name during Lent) to spend $500,000 on red light cameras after a law was found prohibiting paying the camera vendor from fines generated from the cameras. (Good thing that law was found in time.)
On a seemingly unrelated front, Macon’s panhandling [...]

I received this email from Nancy White, Ward V City Council member, on Saturday and thought I’d pass it on:

Giving up you-know-who for Lent
February 25th, 2007 · No Comments
A reader emailed me saying that on Sundays during Lent I had a dispensation and could say all I wanted to about you-know-who.
I replied that I thought you had to get a special dispensation from the Archdiocese and I didn’t know anyone at the Archdiocese, but that if you-know-who stepped into any you-know-what during the [...]

Let’s give him up
February 24th, 2007 · 2 Comments
Everywhere we’ve turned for the past few years there’s been C. Jack doing everything but running the city. He started out with simple neglect of his CEO duties as he jetted back and forth to Ghana. But he moved beyond that to culture shock as he changed his name to Hakim Mansour [...]
