Thanks to a faithful reader, we have been pointed to this article by Terrance Moore, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist, and the rabid responses by his readers on the subject of why the fallout over Uga VI’s death has been so emotional:
Even so, none of (the other college mascots) would come close to inspiring folks to do the following: Fly their remains on a private plane to campus, bury them in a fancy vault and have a funeral service that includes a Baptist minister presiding and the president of the university speaking.
So why are the Ugas such a huge cut above the rest when it comes to generating these kinds of emotions?
Help me out.
Please.
Read the responses from his readers and you’ll learn what it means to be a true member of the Bulldog Nation.

My son-in-law is one of the biggest Tech fans in the universe. He loves Buzz. But when it comes to mascots, that little dog has always had his heart. Look at that little guy! He is so cute. Who could ever deny Uga his props in the adorability department. People love dogs, and people who love bulldogs REALLY love them. People may root for Georgia Tech, but if given a chance to spend a moment with Uga, they would do it in a heartbeat.

P.S. - - after 217 replies to Moore’s outrageous column, AJC closed out further comments.

There are some great, polite UGA fans, and there are some that make us leave Atlanta, nay the state, when Tech plays Georgia in Atlanta. Nuff said…

I refused to comment on the post itself, but I sent Mr. Moore an email, through the paper’s sports editor and college sports editor.
Mr. Moore’s email address is not listed anywhere on ajc.com that I could find. No surprise there.
My point was this: Anyone who doesn’t understand the difference between Uga VI and some guy in a yellow jacket costume is not qualified to work as a sports columnist for the largest newspaper in Georgia.
And anyone who pretends not to understand it just to rile people is lazy.

I think he was trying to stir up some readership. I think possibly anything goes to get people to peek at the newspaper. I bet any breathing human in this state has an awareness of the obsession with Uga. I am sure the AJC writer was aware.
